Am Wochenende habe ich mit [Galatea] und ihrem Mann den Culver City Kunstspaziergang besucht.
[Lukas Roth] von Regensburg @ [Kopeikin Gallery]:
Roth's strikingly monstrous photography prints had me in awe at first viewing; I was like a child again, dwarfed by everything around me. Not all of these were shown, but with just six of these colossal photographs the live exhibit had just as broad a spectrum of vision: some teeming with leisurely pursuits with others underwhelmingly barren; one prismatic picture taking over the side wall with a pallid palette of snow shrouding the perpendicular. Each stimulating in its own distinct way. They are portraits of places as people; landscapes stretching as far as the room's horizons & seemingly as tall as a pointed chapel ceiling. From a distance they rouse an eagerness within the gazer to step a little closer & inspect the details more intimately. Once mere inches from the print one notices things lurking in the shadows of a cave, miniscule reflections off an aquarium's glass or an office building's windows, a swimsuit that looks just like one you had as a kid, someone's desktop screensaver that is the exact one you use at home, stacks of highrise buildings creeping behind stacks of books at a library, four miniature figurines exploring an unfrozen waterfall against a vastly frozen backdrop. Initially the photographs skim the surface of a commonplace scene you've either experienced firsthand or seen secondhand; then once you spend a little time getting to know the piece, Roth's minute & meticulous additions amplify the familiarity in your mind. A collective pool of personal memories begins to materialize at the center of the room, its presence unspoken but felt nonetheless.
[obviously these pictures do no justice, just imagine them taking up your entire living room wall]
[[& I squeezed in a couple of photos I just discovered by [Mr. Spit] that immediately fit the theme as well]]
